Terrorism still a problem, church rebounding from scandal, “The Passion of the Christ” a hot topic and a new bishop for the Diocese of Greensburg. So little and yet very much since my last writing.

As I write, Spain is grieving, as well we all should, for the recent bombings in their country. The loss of so many lives seems to be a message once again from a group of fanatical people bent on revenge and world terrorism. The church has more incidents of molestation and cover-ups still coming to light. As well as a bishop who resigned and will be prosecuted for hit and run.

Why does God permit the above atrocities to continue? A valid question we all ask and one that has been asked throughout the history of mankind. There seems to be no answer except in the scriptures and teachings of our faith, that God does not think nor act as man does. Which leads to the recent movie, “The Passion of the Christ”. The controversy over bigotry, seems to be one driven by the press. I have seen and talked with others as well as listened to those interviewed who have seen the movie and bigotry is never mentioned.

With all the visual effects that can be done in modern film today, the story we have heard many times before on “Holy Thursday and Good Friday” puts a dramatic visual to the words written for us long ago by those who were there. Nothing shown in the film changed the fact that God gave His Son, Jesus Christ, the task of giving His life for the sins of mankind. Even that of itself is an unanswered question. Would any father give up a son or daughter? No, but we are not God - we are just “of God”. Probably the biggest question in our search for the meaning of life.

Finally, we have a new bishop, Lawrence Brandt, to lead the flock of the Greensburg Diocese. What a fitting way to begin this year’s Lenten journey, with his ordination. I am sure we are all anxiously looking forward to seeing what marks his tenure will bring. And at the same time we say “good-bye” to Bishop Bosco and wish him a blessed and active retirement. As you read this our Lenten journey will probably have been completed or very close to completion. I hope all of you as well as myself, have listened and found more in the scripture readings than in the past. For God truly does speak to us in those words - words that sometimes seem to mystify us-yet give us deep consolation that His love is ever present and active. It is for us to put into effect in our mind and spirit as we do our daily activities.

May you have a Joyous Resurrection and renewal of faith. God Bless.
